Project description
Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match. About us Volvo Penta is a world-leading supplier of engines and complete power systems for marine and industrial applications. Volvo Penta has developed a global leadership and one of the industry’s strongest brands. At Volvo Penta, the Onboard Connectivity department develops and maintains the telematics platform and onboard connectivity solutions. We work closely with backend development teams and IT organizations to enable secure and reliable communication between onboard systems, cloud services, and customer applications. Background: Networking & Edge Computing (Suitable for: Data Communications, Systems Architecture) Relevant programs: Computer Networks Telecommunications Engineering Systems Architecture Computer Engineering Embedded Systems Cloud Computing Cybersecurity Typical student skills: TCP/IP Wireless communication Distributed systems Edge computing Cloud architecture Network protocols Digital twins Synchronization algorithms Description: Turning on a refrigerator remotely requires the boat to be connected. However, boats are often located in archipelagos or remote areas with poor network coverage. This thesis project explores Edge Computing and investigates how logic and system states can be managed locally on the boat while synchronizing intelligently with the cloud. Research questions: •How do you design a system (Digital Twin) where a user can send the command "Turn on the AC" from an app, have the command placed in a queue, and execute it automatically as soon as the boat regains network connectivity? •How should conflicts be handled (for example, if someone manually turned on the AC while on board)? Objective: •Design a robust architecture for asynchronous remote control.
