About this master's thesis at Essity

Essity – a leading global hygiene and health company and the home of brands like Libero, TENA, Libresse, Tork, Sorbact and JOBST is offering an exciting and challenging master thesis opportunity for you who want to contribute with your expertise, energy and creativity.

About the Job

Are you a curious and hands-on student eager to dive deep into real-world technical challenges? At Essity, we believe that innovation begins with understanding problems at their core. Your master thesis could be the key to unlocking new insights that drive our next product breakthroughs in professional hygiene.

Your Role

As a master thesis student, you will join our R&D team focused on material development for nonwoven products. You’ll work closely with experienced colleagues—including a senior material developer and a lab engineer—who will support and mentor you throughout the project.

Your work will contribute directly to an ongoing product development initiative, combining experimental lab work, literature research, and customer interaction. You’ll help us better understand material behaviour and drive improvements in product performance.

Key activities include:

Conducting lab experiments and measurements

Performing statistical data analysis

Reviewing relevant literature to support your findings

We value attention to detail, scientific thinking, and a collaborative mindset. You should be comfortable working in a lab environment and have a basic understanding of statistics. Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn in an inclusive team setting are essential.

Background

Essity operates in the professional hygiene industry, where high-performance cleaning wipes are essential. One of the challenges we face is linting—when fibers or particles are left behind on surfaces after wiping.

Understanding the causes of linting and how different materials interact with various surfaces is critical to developing products that meet our customers’ needs. This thesis project addresses a real issue we’ve encountered and aims to generate actionable insights for future product development.

Project

This thesis will explore the linting behaviour of nonwoven wipes on various surfaces, aiming to understand how material structure and surface characteristics influence fiber release. The goal is to identify correlations between material properties and the tendency to leave particles behind.

You’ll work with a range of nonwoven materials and test surfaces, using methods for lint quantification, friction testing, and microscopy. The project includes experimental work, data analysis, and practical recommendations for product optimization.

The thesis is planned for the spring semester (January–June) and will be supported by experienced supervisors and access to relevant lab equipment.
