Run what runs the world.This Position reports to:R&D Team Lead Your role and responsibilities Mine hoists are the most critical production unit in the underground mines. Payloads of ~70tons can be hoisted with 18m/s from ~1500m below surface.In the future mining high payload solutions are planned to hoist from >2000m.This thesis will address next generation mine hoists, with the goal to reduce energy usage and reduce the environmental impact. Details:Period: January 2027-June 2027, 5 monthsNumber of credits: 30 ECTSNumber of students for this thesis work: 1Location: ABB Corporate Research (Västerås) Goals:​Study focusing on how to simulate airflows and skip movements in a mine hoist using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).Simulate scenarios to evaluate how the air flow changes in the mine shaft, and how it impacts on the skips during production / hoisting.Improve and extend existing simulation environment.Evaluate and develop simplified models that can be used for advanced control.​​​Qualifications for the roleMaster’s student in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similarKnowledge in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulationsMATLAB / Simulink knowledge is advantageousKnowledge in automatic control is advantageous.​More about us Recruiting Manager Linus Thrybom, +46 730 80 9906, will answer your general questions.
