Run what runs the world. This Position reports to:R&D Team Lead Details:· Period: Jan-June 2027· 30 ECTS per student· Number of students: 1· Location: ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, SwedenYou will be part of Materials Technology & Electromagnetics team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. At Corporate Research we lead the innovation within ABB and our task is to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. We work in close collaboration with other research centers, our business areas: Motion, Automation and Electrification, as well academic and industrial partners. In our creative and highly skilled team we develop, design, build and test new concepts and prototypes of physical and digital powertrains or electrical devices. The topic of underwater noise pollution has gained a lot of attention in recent years, with ship noise affecting the marine life, leading to stricter regulations. ABBs revolutionary marine propulsion system DynafinTM utilizes individual blade control to reach new levels of efficiency compared to traditional marine propulsion systems. The flexibility of the system and very precise blade control allows for optimization of other parameters, such as minimizing noise pollution by adjusting blade trajectories and blade profiles to reduce cavitation. This thesis aims to model the ABB DynafinTM blades to understand how the blade geometry influences the hydrodynamic noise and cavitation-induced noise, as well as understanding how the blades can be optimized to reduce the noise. This will be done using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations and doing hydro-acoustic assessments. The aim is to have a CFD model of the Dynafin blade system as well as a cavitation induced acoustic modelling framework, with the goal of reducing vibrations and noise produced by the system.Your role and responsibilitiesConduct a literature study on the acoustic profile of the systemCFD modelling of the system and simulationsHydrodynamic noise and cavitation analysis during operationCompare different blade design and propose blade design recommendationsQualifications for the roleMaster of Science student in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field.Fluid mechanics experienceCFD expertise.
