Project description

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match. Background: The development of modern Heavy-duty vehicles is becoming increasingly complex due to growing integration of software, electronic sensors and advanced vehicle functions. At the same time, the automotive industry is under continuous pressure to reduce development time and cost, while improving safety, reliability, and product quality. Building and testing physical prototypes is both expensive and time-consuming. For these reasons, the industry is moving towards a left-shifted development and validation process, where testing and verification are performed earlier in the development cycle using simulation and virtual test environments. However, increasing the use of simulation also raises the question of how accurately virtual test environments represent real-world behavior. Different levels of simulation environments, such as Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and full vehicle testing, provide different levels of realism. Understanding the relationship between these testing methods is therefore necessary when deciding what can be performed virtually and which requires physical vehicle validation. Objective: The objective of this thesis is to come up with scenario-based tests and KPIs to assess the fidelity of SIL and HIL, for heavy-duty Electronic Brake Systems (EBS). EBS controls and coordinates several important vehicle functions, such as anti-lock braking, traction control, rollover and stability control, and brake blending. These functions are provided as examples of potential areas of study, it is not expected to cover all of them. By analyzing the behavior obtained at the different testing levels, the study aims to identify similarities, differences, and limitations between testing methods. The results can contribute to a better understanding of how simulation can support and potentially replace parts of traditional vehicle testing while maintaining confidence in system performance and safety. Desired background: Experience in the following areas is desirable: Python Matlab/Simulink Modelling Embedded control systems Vehicle dynamics This thesis project is intended for 2 students.
